7 Best Beach Experiences of Mykonos Island, Greece
Mykonos Beaches, Psarou beach, Mykonos, Platis Gialos beach, Paraga beach
Hitting the beach on a Greek island holiday is a must, but Mykonos beaches are known the world over for their particular beauty. Their smooth, golden sand pairs with clear blue sea and stunning horizon. But depending on the length of your stay, you can only hit so many. Where do you start?
The most obvious answer, of course, is to start with the beach nearest your Mykonos accommodation. At Cavo Psarou Suites, that includes Psarou beach, Mykonos and the nearby Platis Gialos beach. These are certainly worth a visit, but those are only two. There are several Mykonos beaches to visit before you leave.
Psarou Beach
Psarou beach, Mykonos is a must when staying at Cavo Psarou Suites — in fact, it’s our location, so you won’t be able to avoid it. And you won’t want to, with the beautiful view of the bay and the crystal clear water. Besides your accommodations, there are cafes and stores nearby, so you can relax on Psarou beach for hours and want for nothing. There are also rocks nearby that make perfect climbing spots for athletic visitors. It is one of the best loved beaches of Mykonos island.
Paraga Beach
Paraga Beach is a large beach not far from Chora, and therefore easily reached by public transportation. Depending on which side of the beach you visit, you can find one of two different Mykonos island experiences. The northern side of Paraga beach is organized and busy, with music floating in the air from the nearby taverns and plenty of water sports to enjoy. However, if you’re looking for a calmer, quieter experience, try the southern half of the beach. This part of the beach is less organized and left to its natural beauty.
Elia Beach
Elia beach is a bit quieter than some of the party beaches nearby, like Paradise beach, but it’s no less organized. In fact, despite being the longest sandy beach on Mykonos island, Elia is organized all throughout with plenty of taverns nearby to grab lunch before enjoying the beach and a number of watersports facilities. You might even glimpse a celebrity or two in the crowd. This is an excellent beach to take the whole family, and even if you don’t feel like going for a swim, the view atop the nearby hill is splendid.
Lia Beach
Not to be confused with Elia beach, Lia is the perfect place to visit if you want to go for a swim. It’s quiet enough that you won’t feel too crowded, and the water is even and shallow. There are also several nearby rocks which make great perches for diving. Nearby is a beach bar where you can get snacks and drinks to set yourself up for a day at the beach. It’s a fully organized beach, so you can be sure you’ll want for nothing. Though you may find loud music at many Mykonos beaches to encourage the party spirit, Lia beach is a gentle reprieve from that.
Platis Gialos Beach
Platis Gialos beach is only 500 meters from Cavo Psarou Suites and therefore an excellent stop for either the beginning or end of the visit. Many visitors hail Platis Gialos as the best of all the Mykonos beaches, and this is partly because of its near location to so many excellent restaurants and hotels. The water is deep blue and famously clean and it’s organized, with daybeds all along the beach. This is also a great beach to visit on a day with less than perfect weather, as its position shields it from much of that weather.
Ornos Beach
Ornos beach is considered the most family friendly beach on Mykonos island, Greece, making it perfect for Mykonos family holidays for guests of Cavo Psarou Suites. It’s peaceful and tidy, but there’s no shortage of sand, sun, and exquisite sea for the whole family to enjoy. A lovely breeze graces this beach, keeping you cool even on the hottest days.
Agios Ioannis Beach
This is one of the smaller Mykonos beaches, but definitely worth a visit and with buses that run to and from there regularly during high season. True to its name — after the famous St. John — this beach offers a view not just of the water and bay but of a historic church in the village. This beach has a touch of celebrity to it, as well. Sometimes nicknamed Shirley Valentine beach, this is where the 1989 Shirley Valentine movie was filmed.
Mykonos island, Greece has many beaches to offer, whether you’re looking for a party or quality time with the family or significant other. But at the end of the day, you’ll need somewhere to stay amidst your Mykonos family holiday. Cavo Psarou offers two different types of Mykonos suites, named for the twin deities in Greek mythology.
